During the holiday season, you begin to see more and more charitable events in the holiday spirit, and for Local 253 this year was no different than the past three. On December 16th, it was the fourth consecutive year that Local 253 has partnered with the Xmas Tree Santa’s at the Boys & Girls Club of Newark to give away free trees to residents of Newark who are less fortunate and unable to buy their own. Kevin Goodsir, member of Local 253 and VOC Chair, first brought the program to everyone’s attention and has since become a wonderful tradition. The Xmas Tree Santa’s gave out about 7,000 trees in total this holiday season by operating programs in many different cities across the country.
Kevin has also raised over $6,000 from our contractors, members and through local American Legion halls to purchase toys for over 100 local children and provide a party to distribute the gifts. The number of members who show up to volunteer are a true testament to how much they care about their community. In a time of year when there is so much going on, it is heart-warming to see the true compassion that the carpenters and contractors in North Jersey have. After all is complete with the tree giveaway and toy drive, whatever funds that are left over go to buying more gifts and then distributed to the various shelters in Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties. The Holiday spirit can truly be felt and gives such a wonderful experience to the volunteers who come out.
