The new Syracuse Training Center is located at 6920 Princeton Court, neighboring the Local 277 office building. This state-of-the art facility is 17,000 square foot and will include three classrooms equipped with top-class technologies, A/V equipment and highly-skilled instructors. The two-story building, which is expected to be completed in the Summer of 2018, will also house Local 277 council and research department staff.
On October 11th, the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC) held the ground-breaking ceremony for this North Syracuse carpenter training center. NRCC Representatives, Local 277 staff, Carpenter Contractor Trust staff, community organizations and elected/appointed officials from the Syracuse region attended.

Several attendees spoke including Jim Hayes, NRCC Director of Apprenticeship and Training; Dave Haines, Northwestern NY Regional Manager; Earl Hall, Executive Director of the Construction Employers Association of Central NY; Commissioner, Roberta Reardon, NYS Department of Labor; Senator, Dave Valesky; Assemblywoman, Pam Hunter; and Assemblyman, William Magnarelli. They each emphasized the enormous impact that this training center will have on Onondaga County and surrounding regions. Other distinguished guests included Supervisor Mark Nicotra, Town of Salina; Legislator Deb Cody, Onondaga County; Mayor Billy Barlow, City of Oswego and Mayor Michael Quill, City of Auburn.

“This training center – that we envisioned in partnership with the Construction Employers Association of Central New York – will help us to fit the needs of our members and contractors ensuring that our carpenters are building Central New York for the next generation,” said David Haines, Northwest NY Regional Manager. “The Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters Training Fund is investing $5 million for the construction of this new facility, so that we can continue to provide highly skilled and quality carpenters to our signatory contractors in Northern and Central New York.”

There will be a 12,000 square foot workshop, that will give apprentices and journeymen top-class, hands-on training in all carpentry facets and specialties.

“Everyone from members to contractors are very excited to be getting this new training center. It will be a great tool for us to grow our membership further, adding to our skillset pool, which in turn, will make us more competitive,” said Jim Mason, Local 277 Council Representative. “The excavation is currently well underway. RH Law, the excavation contractor, for this project, is doing a fantastic job. I’m grateful to be able to be involved in this project.”

This $5.5 million training facility, will lay the groundwork in creating the next generation of highly-skilled union carpenters. The NRCC provides an earn while you learn apprenticeship program which includes the best training thus resulting in highly-skilled, flexible and competitive workers. This apprenticeship training can also be applied towards a college degree in a construction related program.
