The Northeast Carpenters Apprenticeship Training Fund/Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters, partnered with the Orange County Employment and Training Administration, to sponsor a carpenter pre-apprentice program for economically disadvantaged youths.

The program initiative is to serve as a path for economically disadvantaged youths, who live at the poverty level but want to work and find a career. The six-week program offers students, from 18-24 years of age, tremendous opportunities to gain an insight into what it’s like to learn, work and fulfill a career as a union carpenter. Graduates of the program, can immediately enter a five-year apprenticeship program, consisting of classroom and hands-on training, leading to journeyman status.

In May, nine youths entered the program in Rock Tavern, NY. Out of the nine, seven students completed the program and six have indentured into a full-time apprentice program with the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters. The program was a great success because those who enrolled had a real-life glimpse of what it’s like to learn and work as a union carpenter. What we do isn’t easy but it is also fulfilling. The pre-apprenticeship program gives them an unvarnished view of a carpenter’s work life.

The structured curriculum involves 240-hours of coursework, which includes union history, construction math, concrete formwork, wood and metal framing and acoustical ceilings. The introduction to these subjects proves vital in allowing the candidates to sample the carpentry profession, as these are just some of the subjects that a full-time apprentice faces.
